Royal Manufactory of Berlin - Lot 98
Royal Manufactory of Berlin Porcelain triptych comprising three rectangular panels based on the Deploration of Christ altarpiece by Quentin Metsys in Antwerp, the central panel depicting the Deploration of Christ, the left panel depicting Herod's feast and Salome bringing the head of Saint John the Baptist, and the right panel depicting the martyrdom of Saint John the Evangelist. Mid-19th century. The panels are mounted in a large Neo-Gothic carved wooden frame. Quentin Metsys (1466-1530) was a Flemish painter and master of the Antwerp painters' guild. In the early 16th century, he was commissioned by the carpenters' guild to create an altarpiece for Notre-Dame d'Anvers: the Deploration of Christ altarpiece, completed in 1509 and serving as a model for our work. Metsys, a pioneer of the Antwerp School, stood out for the realism of his figures and the great piety of his compositions. Here, the altarpiece stands out for the melancholy of the saints, the tenderness of the Virgin for her son and, in contrast, the brutality of Christ's jailers and the greed of the powerful depicted on the side panels. The Royal Porcelain Manufactory of Berlin, KPM Berlin, was founded by Frederick the Great in 1763 and has been producing porcelain pieces ever since. In the 19th century, the KPM notably produced reproductions of paintings on porcelain, such as the Allegory of the Flight into Egypt after Tassaert, or a pair of plates depicting musicians after paintings by Gerrit Dou (on sale at Million Paris on February 13, 2019). H.: 128 cm ; W.: 90 cm ; D.: 19 cm
