Rare wooden case, carved on all sides, decorated with cut-ou - Lot 95
Rare wooden case, carved on all sides, decorated with cut-out clerestory ornaments on a background of red, orange and green polychrome bands. The decorative ensemble is composed of poly-lobed rosettes, lively foliage and fleurons; the patina on the lock is also openwork and decorated in the same way; the uprights forming the feet are adorned with fillings. The interior is lined with an eclipette, the lid of which is decorated with a Gothic motif carved in bas-relief. Switzerland, 15th century H.: 21.5 cm - W.: 29.7 cm - D.: 19.2 cm (Minor accidents) Provenance: Former collection of Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild (1812 - 1870) This rare case, with its highly refined execution, is similar to another in the Louvre Museum (inv OA 261), which came from the Sauvageot collection and entered the national collections in 1856. The extreme finesse with which the ornaments are cut into the clerestory makes it a remarkable object. The harmony of the Gothic forms and the overall composition of the decorative elements are perfectly ordered and enhanced by a subtle, shimmering polychrome background.
