Slightly missing Wolfgang Heimbach, German genre painter and portraitist, worked in several European courts. While he was the organizer of large compositions, group portraits and assemblies of good company, executed on imposing formats, he was also the painter of more intimate, small-format portraits, such as the two presented here. Heimbach represented the powerful of his time, including Pope Innocent X, Ferdinand IV of Habsburg and Frederick III of Denmark, for whom he became the official portraitist in Copenhagen.
