Rare engraved ivory and bronze universal sundial. Composed o - Lot 88
Rare engraved ivory and bronze universal sundial. Composed of a polar sundial on top of the lid; under the lid three superimposed lunar sundial disks; then a magnetic sundial with compass background with geopolitical table with eleven columns and nineteen cities: Aix, Angers, Bayonne, Bordeaux, Chalons, Dijon, Grenobles, La Rochelle, Limoges, Lyon, Montpellier, Nantes, Poitiers, Paris, Rhodez, Roüen, Toulouse, Troye, Dieppe; on the reverse, bronze perpetual calendar disk signed Jacques Senecal A Dieppe Fecit; fine double-fillet engraving around and on the bottom of the box, denticulated frieze only on the main faces of the tablets. Dieppe, Jacques Sénécal, second half of the 17th century L.: 7 cm - Wg.: 6.2 cm - Gross weight: 96 gr (small missing magnetic dial needle, lunar dial recomposed) Several dials by Jacques Sénécal are preserved in Dieppe (inv 890.29.7, inv 891.9.10), but only one is listed today, with a polar dial on the first face (inv 902.20.4). Jacques Sénécal's style is clearly expressed on this dial, however, and sets it apart from the more common dials by Jean Bloud. Book consulted: Les cadrans solaires, Les cahiers de l'ivoire du musée de Dieppe, n°1, p 69.
