STRAET, Jan van der, known as Joannes STRADANUS Venationes Ferarum, Avium, Piscium pugnæ bestiariorum & mutuæ bestiarum depictæ A Ionne Stradano [Antwerp], Nicolas Visscher, [1670-1702] FAMOUS STRADAN SUITE PRINTED HERE BY NICOLAS VISSCHER. SUPERB SCENES OF HUNTING, FISHING AND FISHERY IN A 16th CENTURY AS REAL AS IT IS MYTHIC Oblong folio (380 x 265mm). All captions in Latin on two columns CONDITION: circa 1670 reprint of the suite published in 1578, consisting at the time of 104 plates; the order of the plates has been recomposed and they have been renumbered. The edition of this suite can be attributed to Nicolaes Visscher I (1618-1679) as well as to his son Nicolaes Visscher II (1649-1702). COLLATION and ILLUSTRATION: allegorical title and 102 plates numbered 1-102, all copper-engraved, 7 shorter plates mitered at the time of binding (nos. 2, 10, 36, 41, 48, 87, 88). These plates are signed "Joan. Stradanus invent, Joan. Collaert sculp., Joan. Galle excud. Some plates are engraved by Carol. De Mallery, Cornelius Galle, Theodorus Galle; quite a few bear no engraver's name. All are accompanied by captions in Latin verse (four or two verses, depending on the plate)". (Thiébaud). As befits this edition, the plates have been line-cut and laminated. ENGLISH BINDING, CIRCA 1850, WITH NEO-CLASSICAL DECORATION. Ivory vellum over stiff boards, gilt decoration, title on upper board, palmettes frame, ornate ribbed spine, brass clasps, red edges. ATTACHMENT: list of plates and handwritten note inserted at the beginning of the volume PROVENANCE: George Watson Neish (b. 1849, founder of the Macfarlane law firm; ex-libris business card on the flyleaf) Some light spotting and scattered foxing. Beautiful and famous suite of engravings on hunting, fishing, falconry and beekeeping. Jan van der Straet was born in Bruges in 1536 and worked most of his life in Italy. "From 1563 to 1571, he was employed by Duke Cosimo de Medicis in Florence, who commissioned him to make designs for tapestries depicting hunting and fishing scenes, for the decoration of the twenty-two rooms in the Poggio-Cajano Palace."
