OF SUPERB PLATES BY JOHANN ELIAS RIDINGER: "WEIRD HEADS" AND TROPHIES, INCREDIBLE HUNTING SCENES ORIGINAL EDITIONS folio (435 x 335mm) (1). Fürstenlust... COLLATION and ILLUSTRATION: bilingual folding title, first 12 plates (of 36) including 4 large folding plates; (2). Abbildung der Jagdbaren Thiere..., Augsburg, Johann Elias Ridinger, 1740. COLLATION and ILLUSTRATION: title printed in red and black with large engraved vignette and preface printed on verso, 23 plates of animals with volcelets at bottom of each plate; (3). [Genaue und richtige Vorstellung der wundersamten Hirschen...]. COLLATION and ILLUSTRATION: without title, 70 plates (of 100) showing very spectacular "weird heads" shot by German Princes. (4). [Jäger und Falkoniers]. COLLATION and ILLUSTRATION: no title required by Schwerdt, 15 plates (of 25), unnumbered, corresponding to Schwerdt's letters: I, C, K, A, E, G, B, D, H, F, L, M, N, O, P, making a total of 120 plates, 105 of which are original engravings by Johann Elias Ridinger, i.e. drawn and engraved by him, and 15 plates engraved by his son Martin Elias Ridinger after drawings by Johann Elias Ridinger his father. CONTEMPORARY FRENCH BINDING. Marbled calf, framed with gilt fillets, ornate spine, gilt edges. Spine redone Ridinger's plates were bound as they were published. The completeness of copies is therefore often very relative, especially when it comes to the rare copies in contemporary bindings. The quality of the engravings by this great German artist is to be admired plate by plate, in isolation. Commenting on the collection Vorstellung der wundersamten Hirschen, J.-C. Brunet states, for example: "the earlier editions are less complete, but they contain better proofs; we have one that contained only 70 plates published from 1740 to 1756, without title" (Brunet, IV, 1298). This is precisely the case here. BIBLIOGRAPHY: Thiébaud, 783-784 -- Schwerdt III, (1): p. 134, (2): p. 137, (3): pp. 138-139, (4): pp. 136-137 -- Brunet, Manuel, IV, col. 1297-1298
