POPE, Alexander, and Ernest INGERSOLL Upland Game Birds and Water Fowl of the United States New York, Charles Scribner's and Sons, [1877]-1878 BIRDS OF AMERICA AFTER AUDUBON: A BEAUTIFUL HUNTING BOOK WITH MONUMENTAL PLATES. A RARE COPY PRESERVED UNBOUND, AS SUCH, IN ITS ORIGINAL ILLUSTRATED COVERS. ORIGINAL EDITION Large folio (720 x 565mm) ISSUE: copy in its delivery covers: "the work will be issued monthly in numbers"... (prospectus) COLLATION: 10 numbered delivery covers with title and large black illustrated decoration on each upper cover, publisher's prospectus on verso of each second cover, 1 explanatory leaflet for each plate, i.e. 2 leaflets per delivery, 2 plates per delivery, each cover bears the name of the two birds treated in the upper right-hand corner. ILLUSTRATION: 20 chromolithographs mounted on cardboard, some enhanced by hand with gum arabic IN LEAF, in a large blue cloth portfolio PROVENANCE: Lord Hesketh (Sotheby's London, Books and manuscripts from the Fermor-Hesketh Library at Easton Neston, December 12, 1999, no. 344, £4,600) Some covers damaged with occasional small tears (4, 5, 6), all covers split at the spine, one of the text leaves with a tear not missing, one of the serpents has left two paper marks on one of the plates of the last issue. "It is the design of this work to present to the American public a series of exact illustrations of some of our principal Game Birds and Water Fowl, drawn from and colored to the life by an artist sportsman who has given them ten years of careful and patient study". This copy, exceptionally preserved in paperback under its original covers specially printed for each of the ten issues, does not have the general title probably printed later when the work was sold as a volume.
