OUDRY, Jean-Baptiste [Suite de chasse]. Dedicated to Messire Louis Bontemps Premier Valet de Chambre ordinaire du Roy ; Gouverneur du Palais des Tuilleries, Bailli et Capitaine des Chasses de la Varenne du Louvre... By his very humble and obedient servant J.-B. Oudry [Paris], Painted and engraved by J.B. Oudry Peintre du Roy, 1725 RARE AND BEAUTIFUL SET OF FOUR ORIGINAL ENGRAVINGS BY JEAN-BAPTISTE OUDRY, FORMING A COMPLETE HUNTING SUITE, BY ONE OF THE GREAT ANIMAL PAINTERS OF THE 18th CENTURY. COPY OF THE VERNE folio (410 x 310mm, approx.) ILLUSTRATION: 4 numbered etchings, the first serving as the title and the other three bearing an engraved quatrain signed with the initials L.C. CONDITION: third state, with Huquier's address and etching numbers BINDING SIGNED BY HONNELAÎTRE. White vellum spine and corners, marbled paper boards, vellum label on upper board. ATTACHMENT: another engraving by J.-B. Oudry (297 x 223 mm) engraved and published by Huquier: "Livre d'animaux par Jean Baptiste Oudri Peintre du Roy" (five dogs barking at the foot of a tree where an owl and a fox are hanging). PROVENANCE: Du Verne Bernis hunting library (Paris, October 5, 2016, no. 302) A few small stains and halos, traces of mounting on verso of proofs, plates 2 and 4 are shorter. Chevalier Louis Bontemps (1701-1747), Capitaine des chasses de la Varenne et du Louvre, was the grandson of Alexandre Bontemps (1626-1701), Comte de Saulloy, famous First Valet to King Louis XIV. He knew all the secret corridors of Versailles and all the most intimate stories of his august master.
