ORME, Edward and Samuel HOWITT Orme's Collection of British Field Sports London, Edward Orme, 1807 [-1808] "VERY RARE. THE FIRST AND ONLY EDITION OF THE FINEST AND MOST IMPORTANT SPORTING BOOK OF THE LAST TWO CENTURIES" (Schwerdt). A FINE COPY, PARTLY PRESERVED IN ITS ORIGINAL COVERS. THE BOARDS HAVE FULL MARGINS, ARE UNTRIMMED AND IN VERY GOOD CONDITION. FORMER LE VIVIER COLLECTION ORIGINAL and UNIQUE EDITION Oblong folio (458 x 580mm) ILLUSTRATION: aquatint-engraved title, list of plates at the end of the last section with vignette of a large aquatint-engraved hare, 20 large aquatint-engraved plates, ALL IMPROVED AT THE TIME WITH SUPERB COLORING MOST OCCASIONAL BROCHAGE in 10 large quires: quires 1 and 3 to 6 in their original large blue paper leaves with a large black engraved vignette on the first cover, repeated with the number of the quire by hand in a cartouche, quires 2 and 8 to 10 without vignette and using old paper for the covers, quire 7 with the engraved vignette but the paper of the quire most certainly renewed. Large morocco and cloth box by Aquarius PROVENANCE: Le Vivier (Christie's London, The Le Vivier library of sporting books and modern first editions, October 30, 2012, lot 214) Minor restorations of marginal tears to plates 1, 4, 10-13 and 20, those of plates 6-7-13 touch the edge of the image, some minor defects. R. V. Tooley calls this book "a magnificent work, the most valuable English color plate book on Sport". It is very rare to find this work in its original condition, in quires, even if some of them have been renewed.
