Guillaume d'Oncieux (1560-1630), president of the Savoy Senate, is considered to have been one of the most learned men of his time. His work Miles venator takes the form of a dialogue on hunting between a soldier venator and a pig keeper, whose conclusion is that pigs are better-natured than dogs. The text also touches on a wide range of subjects, including love, religion, natural history, witches, brigandage and torture.
