Apperley's articles first appeared in journals before being collected in volumes:
"he published his first article for the Sporting Magazine under the name of Nimrod in January 1822, a pen name he generally used thereafter. For five seasons, from 1824 to 1828, he was the magazine's official representative, with a contract that gave him £1,500 a year, a remarkably high salary intended to cover his travel expenses and the upkeep of a string of hunters.... He travels all over the kingdom, reporting on many sporting events in addition to foxhunting, and often driving the carriages in which he is a passenger" (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography).
