[LIEUTENANT DE LOUVETERIE]. SUBLET, Michel, marquis d'HEUDIC - Lot 159
[LIEUTENANT DE LOUVETERIE]. SUBLET, Michel, marquis d'HEUDICOURT [Signed] Fontainebleau, October 19, 1684 COMMISSION DE LIEUTENANT DE LOUVETERIE SIGNED BY MICHEL SUBLET D'HEUDICOURT, GRAND LOUVETIER DU ROI LOUIS XIV. GABRIEL DE LA HAYE DE CHAREAU BECOMES LIEUTENANT OF THE WOLFRY IN "TOURAINE AND BAS VENDÔMOIS". Manuscript on vellum, folio (500 x 345mm), brown ink, signed Sublet d'Heudicourt and countersigned by Vaillant, red wax seal with Heudicourt arms: "ayant pouvoir de Sa Majesté de Commettre et Establir des Lieutenances de la Louveterie dans l'estendue de son Royaume, Pays et Terres de son obéissance, forêts, bois et buissons [nomme] le Sieur de Laye de Chareau [..] lieutenant of the wolf hunt in Touraine and in the lower Vendôme area"..., then follows a description of the hunts to be carried out "with horns, cries, nets and other devices (...) with dogs and all kinds of weapons, sticks and traps"... Missing parchment at the top of the document, with damage to a few letters on the first line. The Marquise d'Heudicourt (1644-1709), born Bonne de Pons, was the King's mistress in 1661. Her husband Michel Sublet d'Heudicourt (d. 1718) made the most of royal favor. The office of Grand Louvetier de France remained in the Marquis d'Heudicourt's descendants until the mid-18th century: "Her husband took advantage of it with a high stick, without almost living with it, but he made himself feared. He was an old villain, very debauched and horrible, who suffered because of her, and [they] never stopped tormenting each other. He was a big player, the most annoying and the most angry, and always prickly and furious" (Saint-Simon, Mémoires, t. VII, ch. IV).
