Pierre de Crescens (1230-1321), a citizen of Bologna with a background in logic, medicine, natural sciences and law, completed his Liber ruralium commodorum between 1304 and 1309. In twelve books, his work sets out "the doctrine of fields, plants and animals", a source of "rural prouffitz". The last four parts deal with hunting and falconry, animal husbandry and the farmyard. Crescens' treatise is considered one of the most important works on agriculture, animal husbandry and horticulture of the Middle Ages. It circulated widely in manuscript form before being printed for the first time in Augsburg in 1471 by Johann Schüssler, then translated into several vernacular languages. In France, the only copy of this edition preserved in a public institution is at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (RES-S-283).
