History: Aristide Bruant (1851-1925) was a French chansonnier and successful songwriter who ran a cabaret in Montmartre, "Le Militon", where he was renowned for creating a sensation by abusing his audience. The latter took an early interest in Lautrec's work and commissioned four poster designs from the artist. In this poster, the third in the series, Lautrec emphasizes the spectacular side of the character, heightening the allure and theatricality of his costume, consisting of a large hat, black cape and red scarf, and holding a cane in his hand. In this highly recognizable style, Lautrec uses the classic graphic elements of Japanese painting
