VAN LOO Carle (1705-1765), d'après
La confidente. Enhanced watercolor engraving, circa 1755, signed Jacques Firmin Beauvarlet (1731-1797), printed in Paris by the author, dedicated to Monsieur le Marquis de Marigny, Conseiller d'État ordinaire d'épée, Commandeur des ordres du roi, preserved in a handsome antique carved and gilded wood frame decorated with foliage. Slight foxing, but overall good condition. Sight: H.: 48.5 cm - W.: 38 cm. Frame: H.: 78.5 cm - W.: 67 cm. History: this fine engraving, entitled "La confidente", is a reworking of Carle Van Loo's work, commissioned by the Marquise de Pompadour, for the door top of her "À la Turque" bedroom at the Château de Bellevue. This was the counterpart to another painting depicting the Marquise de Pompadour as a sultana drinking coffee. Both paintings were exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1755 (see exhibition catalog Carle Van Loo, premier peintre du roi, Nice, Clermont-Ferrand and Nancy 1977, page 76).
