CLÉMENTINE, princesse d'Orléans (1817-1907) - Lot 201
CLÉMENTINE, princesse d'Orléans (1817-1907) Aria Gonzalo finding her son dead. Watercolor with gouache highlights on paper pasted on sheet, from a sketchbook, signed lower right "Clémentine" and dated "mai 1838", with autograph text by the artist illustrating this scene, from La Romance du Cid: "Aria Gonzalo dying on the battlefield found the arena deserted, he saw a younger son who was losing his blood, he formed like a rose that soon unfolded". Small tears on the lower part, but good overall condition. Sight: H.: 26 cm - W.: 36 cm. Stand: H.: 42.5 cm - W.: 51 cm. History: This drawing was inspired by Alexandre Dumas père's novel published in the newspaper L'Ariel on March 5, 1836. At the time, Dumas was a close friend of King Louis-Philippe, having previously worked for him as his secretary. For this book, Dumas chose a different moment in the life of Le Cid than the one chosen by Pierre Corneille. Dumas drew his inspiration from a play by Guillén de Castro in which the Cid is one of the judges in a battle between the city of Zamora and Bellido de Olfos. To defend the honor of her city, Aria Gonzalo sends her three sons to fight Bellido de Olfos. Bellido de Olfos kills two of them, but fails to finish off the third, depicted in the drawing, and loses the competition. Provenance: Christie's sale, Paris, November 27, 2002, under n°227
