The Judgment of Clara de Clare. Watercolor on paper pasted on sheet, from a sketchbook, signed lower right with the initials "C. O." (Clémentine d'Orléans) and dated 1834. Good condition. Sight: H.: 27.5 cm - W.: 36 cm. Stand: H.: 42 cm - W.: 51 cm. History: This scene was inspired by Walter Scott's poem "Marmion", published in 1808, which recounts the battle of Flodden Field in 1513. It tells the story of Lord Marmion who, in order to enlarge his estate, wishes to marry Clara de Clare, daughter of the Earl of Gloucester, already promised to Sir Ralph de Wiltron.
