CLÉMENTINE, princesse d'Orléans (1817-1907).
View of Randan Castle in the Puy-de-Dôme. Watercolor on paper pasted on sheet, from a sketchbook, signed lower left with the artist's initials C. O. (Clémentine, Orléans), titled and dated at the bottom "Vue de Randan d'après nature; 7br 1838". Good condition. Sight: H.: 30 cm - W.: 20 cm. Support: H.: 51 cm - W.: 42.5 cm. History: Château de Maulmont, built by the Knights Templar in the 13th century, was confiscated from them by King Philippe le Bel. Purchased by Louis-Philippe, then Duke of Orléans, and his sister Princess Adelaïde in 1821, it was rebuilt by architect Pierre Fontaine from 1821 to 1831, and became known as Château de Randan. According to the future King of the French, he made this purchase and renovation in order to provide himself with a retreat far from Paris in case of peril, preferring exile in Auvergne to further emigration, which he was not spared, since he had to leave in March 1848 for England, where he died two years later in Claremont. When Princess Adelaïde died, having no children of her own, the estate was left to her nephew, Prince Antoine d'Orléans, Duc de Montpensier. This private place, attached to the d'Orléans family, is often mentioned in the correspondence of Louis-Philippe's children. Provenance Christie's sale, November 25, 2002, lot no. 228
