PODESTI Francesco (1800-1895), attribué à
Bust portrait of the young Comte de Chambord (1820-1883). Oil on canvas, unsigned, dating from 1840, preserved in its magnificent original carved and gilded wooden frame surmounted by the great arms of France under a royal crown and adorned at each corner in a cartouche with a fleur-de-lys. Some age wear to the frame, but overall good condition. Sight: H.: 64 cm - W.: 51 cm. Frame: H.: 106 cm - W.: 82 cm. History: It was during his tour of Europe that the young prince arrived in Rome on October 20, 1839, and made the acquaintance of the Italian painter Francesco Podesti. It was during the following year that Podesti painted the above portrait. This work was widely reproduced in engravings and lithographs in the second half of the 19th century. Reference: several versions of this portrait are known, each with slight variations, such as the one in the Raymond Jeanvrot collection (Musée de Bordeaux, Inv. 58.1.5443), in which the prince wears a black tie. There is also a full-length version, signed by the artist and dated 1840, in which the prince holds a pair of gloves in his left hand (Château de Chambord, Inv. Ch/41/0551), and in another version, the prince wears a cape, in the same pose, but against a green background.
