Haruhiko Ishihara made his debut in 1968 with Gon at Hinomaru Bunko. He went on to produce works in a wide variety of genres, alternating darkness and surrealism with the lightness of sports or comic manga. He published mainly in the supplements to Shonen Sunday and in the magazine COM from Mushi Production, founded in 1967 by Osamu Tezuka, a magazine specializing in avant-garde manga. Although published over a period of only four years, this publication, along with Garo magazine, helped establish gekiga and manga for adult audiences. Ishihara's line, his nervous cutting, his precise inking, his daring shots for the time, his very adult, sometimes disturbing subjects, made him an important artist in the avant-garde production of the early 70s. His later work was wiser.
