Large needle lace panel, Alençon or Argentan, mid-19th century. The rectangular center is charmingly decorated with garlands of leaflets with knotted ribbons, sprays of carnations, tulips, wheat or rushes, and held in place by a knotted ribbon, the motifs linked by a fine Argentan-style scalloped mesh, The panel is hemmed on three sides with a wide ruffle in the same technique, richly decorated with falling garlands adorned with cartouches and medallions punctuated with knotted ribbons, and sprays of flowers with knotted ribbons. Dim. central panel: 103 x 77 cm flywheel: 3.25 m x 36 cm (good condition, two tears, very small holes at the edges and a stain on the central panel, valance in very good condition) Provenance: Maison de Ligne, by descent.
