"Je maintiendrai", France, circa 1898 Folded fan, the double - Lot 220
"Je maintiendrai", France, circa 1898 Folded fan, the double sheet of paper printed in bistre with the portrait of Dutch Queen Wilhemina (1880-1948) and her motto "Je maintiendrai". This motto was that of William of Orange-Nassau, before becoming that of the Netherlands in 1815. In 1898, at the age of 18, Wilhelmina came to power. She made an official visit to France that same year, and the press dubbed her "the little queen". This fan is probably a souvenir of that visit. On either side, landscapes of the Netherlands and ice skating, after "Alice Gautier". Mention on the right "E. Buissot Paris/ Déposé". And on the left "Le Lorrain, fournisseur de la Cour/ 67, Kalverstraat Amsterdam". Wooden frame, reperced and painted white. H.t. 29 cm-H.f. 17.5 cm (wear)
