Paul et Virginie, France, circa 1850 Folded fan, the double lithographed paper sheet with four scenes from Bernardin de Saint-Pierre's novel "Paul et Virginie". Set against an exotic backdrop of palm trees and golden banana trees, medallions feature pairs of birds. Four medallions evoke childhood, first love and love at first sight. In the center, the epilogue with Virginie's death before Paul's eyes. On the reverse, vases and foliage on a midnight-blue background. In the center, after the lithographer Eugène André, a concerto in the garden. Mounted in blond horn, engraved and gilded with trumpets, feathers and rabbits. H.t. 26.8 cm- H.f. 10.9 cm (extensive restoration of the leaf)
