Molière declaiming Tartuffe, France, circa 1830-1840 Folded fan, the double sheet in lithographed paper and painted with gouache of Amphitrite's triumph. The goddess is carried across the waters in a marine conch shell, surrounded by nymphs and lovers. On the reverse, a meeting in a drawing room. Courtiers listen attentively to Molière's declamations. The composition is based on N.A. Monsiau's (1754-1837) "Molière déclamant Tartuffe chez Ninon de Lenclos", painted in 1802 (coll. de la Bibliothèque de la Comédie-Française). The Château de Versailles is shown in the background. Mounted in white mother-of-pearl, engraved and silver-plated with flowers and a cornucopia. Silver-plated metal clasp. H.t. 26.5 cm-H.f. 13.5 cm (wear, restorations)
