The Thousand and One Nights, France, circa 1830-1840 Folded - Lot 138
The Thousand and One Nights, France, circa 1830-1840 Folded fan, the double sheet of paper lithographed and gouached with an Orientalist scene. In the intimacy of an oriental palace, a sultan is surrounded by women. Near him, dressed in white, one of them speaks to him and captivates him. The couple is shown on the right on the palace steps. The reverse is lithographed and gouache-painted with a couple in the grounds of a château during the reign of King Louis XIV, perhaps evoking the Sun King's love affairs. White mother-of-pearl mounting, engraved and gilded with foliage and flowers. H.t. 25 cm-H.f. 14 cm (wear, cuts)
