The Royal Family of Naples, Italy, circa 1811-1815 commemora - Lot 120
The Royal Family of Naples, Italy, circa 1811-1815 commemorating Napoleon's comet Folded fan, the double skin sheet painted with nine black-and-white profile portraits in silhouette. Placed in medallions, they are joined by garlands. The portraits are of the royal family of Naples, Royal House of the Two Sicilies, dominated by those of King Ferdinand (1751-1825) and Queen Marie-Caroline (1752-1814), sister of Marie-Antoinette, and their seven children. The reverse painted with a view of the Bay of Gaeta north of Naples, with the handwritten inscription in Italian on the lower left border: "Veduta di Mola di Gaeta in Distanza /", and on the right "della Citta di Gaeta colla sua Fortezza e Rada", after the work by Filippo Hackert (1737-1807) executed in 1790, commissioned by King Ferdinand IV of Naples. Mounted in finely carved ivory, the gold ornaments are engraved with motifs including a heart, a crescent moon and a comet with its tail. In 1811, the particularly spectacular comet known as Napoleon's Comet was observed in the European sky. Height 22 cm-14.9 cm (restorations, wear) Provenance: former Michel Maignan/Duvelleroy collection. This fan was notably exhibited at The Fan Museum, London for the "Royal Fans" exhibition, 2002, n°32. Other fans representing the royal family of Naples are known. See "Ventagli italiani, Moda, Costume Arte", 1990, p. 22.
