Shakespeare's seven ages, England, circa 1796 Fan leaf, before cutting, in paper engraved with seven medallions illustrating the seven ages of life from childhood to senility. The soldier in the center represents the strength of age. The design is by George Wilson, one of a group of English fanciers regularly exhibiting at Stationer's Hall, and collaborating with Sarah Ashton. On the lower border, "Published 1rst Jany 1796 by Sarah Ashton n°28 Little Britain" and on the right "Entered at Stationer's Hall". Diameter 47 cm N.B.: "The Seven Ages of Man" is a set of paintings by Robert Smirke illustrating William Shakespeare's monologue "As you like it" (act II, scene 7).
