Commedia dell' arte, France, circa 1760-1770 Folded fan, the paper sheet painted in gouache with five cartels on a floral trellis background. In the center, in the setting of a palace, Diana the Huntress meets Mars, presenting the head of the boar Calydon. On the sides, medallions feature characters from the Commedia dell'arte, including Harlequin, Pagliaccio and Pantalone. The bust of an Oriental figure completes the medallions. The reverse is mute. Mounted in cut, pierced, engraved and gilded ivory with cartels decorated with flowers and trophies. H.t. 24.9 cm-H.f. 9.9 cm (restorations)
