The Race of Atalanta and Hippomenes, France, circa 1760 Folded fan, the skin sheet lined with gouache-painted paper of the race between Atalanta and Hippomenes after Ovid's "Metamorphoses". The young Atalanta tries to discourage her suitors by challenging them to a race. To win, Hippomenes throws three golden apples offered by Venus. Atalanta picks them up and lets herself be outdone. The reverse is painted with a young woman in a landscape. Mounted in white mother-of-pearl, carved, engraved and gilded with vases and figures. H.t. 26.8 cm-H.f. 12 cm (good condition) N.B.: this subject is rare on the fan. Noël Hallé presented a tapestry cartoon on this theme at the Salon in 1765.
