Hagar and Ishmael, Holland, circa 1750 Folded fan, the leaf in skin, mounted in English, and painted after the Bible of the meeting of the Angel and Hagar, servant of Abraham, with their son Ishmael. Abraham rejected them after the birth of his second son, fathered by his wife Sarah. Hagar fled into the desert, and the Angel appeared to tell her to return to Sarah. The reverse is painted with a sketch of a grove. Mounted in pierced ivory, it is engraved with a mirror image of a man and a shepherdess looking at each other. H.t. 29.5 cm-H.f. 14.2 cm (wear and stains)
