In the garden of a scholar, China and Europe, circa 1730 Fol - Lot 58
In the garden of a scholar, China and Europe, circa 1730 Folded fan, the paper leaf painted in grisaille, of a Chinese scholar in a garden with little vegetation. He stands before a small pedestal table. Next to him is a longevity peach. The leaf features die-cut days, in the style of canivets. This technique adds a great deal of refinement to the leaf. Beautiful, fine white mother-of-pearl mount, each strand engraved with a seaside landscape. The ivory head is covered with a tortoise shell plate. The plumes are engraved in light relief with figures and pavilions in the shade of pine trees. H.t. 28 cm-H.f. 15.7 cm Provenance: former Michel Maignan/Duvelleroy collection. This fan was presented at the "Chine Chinoiseries au château de Maisons-Laffitte" exhibition, November 2005-January 2006, no. 20.
