Les amours d'Antoine et Cléopâtre, Europe, circa 1700 Folded fan, the double gouache-painted skin sheet of an assembly gathered in a palace. The table is set for the Roman general Antony. He opens his arms towards the Egyptian queen Cleopatra. Lovers play with weapons, the soldier's shield and armor, symbolizing war vanquished by love. The reverse features numerous labels, some painted with exotic birds on a purple background, small Chinese figures and two labels featuring waterside landscapes animated by merchants, fishermen or strollers. Ivory frame, the throat painted with dancers and a peasant woman spinning wool. The head is adorned with a brown tortoiseshell plaque. The reverse is decorated with Chinese-style cartels. H.t. 25.2 cm-H.f. 15.4 cm (wear) In a box bearing the address of the fan maker Félix Alexandre in Paris on the lid.
