Olinde and Sophronie, Italy, circa 1700 Rare folded fan, the gouache-painted skin sheet of a woman pleading with a general on his steed, while lovers Olinde and Sophronie are tied to a pyre fed with wood by men. The story is borrowed from Tasso's "Jerusalem Delivered". The courageous Sophronie tries to save her people by offering her life, and Olinde joins her to perish with her beloved. They embody sacrifice for love of country and loved one. The reverse is painted with garlands of flowers in two registers. Ivory mount finely engraved with a deer hunting scene. H.t. 26.9 cm-H.f. 15.5 cm (wear, restorations)
