Phoenix among roses, China, 18th century Rare broken-type fan in brown tortoiseshell, painted on both sides with a phoenix or "fenghuang 凤凰" among roses and rocks. The phoenix is the symbol of the Empress of China, while the dragon is that of the Emperor. The throat painted with a small landscape of bamboo and weeping willow. H.t. 19.5 cm N.B. This fan is similar to the broken Chinese ivory fans of the 18th century. See Cambridge, Fitzwilliam Museum, (inv. M. 85-1985).
