CHINE, Epoque Daoguang Painting Polychrome ink and gouache on paper depicting the sage Lao Zi, seated on a large carved throne, before a circular mandorla from which a multitude of polychrome dragons emerge from the abundant clouds, the whole surmounted by a Buddhist parasol, the background monochrome red. The sage, whose right hand is placed in dhyana mudra, the other resting on his belt, is dressed in a long green robe with gold cloud motifs, the borders adorned with dragons among the clouds, the richly-worked belt taking the form of a chimera's head with pendant. A gold inscription on the right, a cartouche on the lower part indicating manufacture during the reign of the Daoguang emperor (????, Dàogu?ng ji?w?) accompanied by honorary titles.
