Atelier d'Ambroise BOSCHAERT, dit Dubois (Anvers 1543 - 1614 - Lot 176
Atelier d'Ambroise BOSCHAERT, dit Dubois (Anvers 1543 - 1614 Fontainebleau) The sacrifice of the Thessalians on the tomb of Neoptolemos Oil on canvas 204.5 x 139.5 cm. Our painting is a near-contemporary copy, and identical in format, of the third episode of the "Amours de Théagène et Chariclée" cycle, which Ambroise Dubois produced around 1610 for the cabinet of King Henri IV, at the Château de Fontainebleau (209 x 138 cm, still preserved in situ, above the fireplace, inv. 4145). This epic tale, known as the "Ethiopics", written in the 4th century by Heliodorus of Emesa, was translated into French and reprinted several times throughout the 16th century, becoming a veritable bestseller. It was particularly appreciated by Queen Marie de de Médicis. The sacrifice of the Thessalians corresponds to chapter 2 of Book III: Theagene, sets fire to the altar on which two rams have been sacrificed, and Chariclée, on the other side of the altar, carries a libatory vase. The entire fifteen-painting cycle, one of the most important creations of Ambroise Dubois' career, is the first "mise en images" of this story, and was a critical success, to which the existence of our copy bears witness. The paintings were installed in a décor combining wood panelling and stucco framing in the king's study (now the "Salon Louis XIII"), where the dauphin, the future Louis XIII, was born.
