Engraved vignettes by Choffard on the title pages. COLLATION: t. (I): 1 f. n. ch., XVI, 270 pp.; t. (II): 1 f. n. ch., VIII, 310 pp. A few double free leaves have been added to the copy. ILLUSTRATION: 2 portraits of Jean de La Fontaine, by Hyacinthe Rigaud, and Charles Eisen, by Vispre, and 80 etched figures by Eisen. ADDED ILLUSTRATION: second portrait of La Fontaine (on sheet), and five additional etchings: t. I, pp. 51 and 145; t. II, pp. 7, 144 and 224. The Cas de conscience figure (t. II, p. 144) is bound in double condition, covered and uncovered. UNIFORM CONTEMPORARY BINDINGS. Marbled calf, framed with gilt roulette, ornate spines, gilt edges. Old restorations to hinges and headpieces. Portrait of La Fontaine a little short of the outer margin According to Cohen-de Ricci, this edition may have been produced from unsold copies of the Fermiers généraux edition (1762), which explains why "they are often as good as the 1762 edition".
