Plat Ramu, Papua - Lot 174
Plat Ramu, Papua Light, dry wood, skating rink Early 19th century Size: 50 cm Provenance : Didier Zanette private collection French private collection These oblong dishes are reminiscent of the pirogues used to trade on the Ramu River. They thus represent the extension of the food circuit, whether to satisfy the immediate needs of human nourishment or those of the ancestors with whom the Melanesians maintain a permanent relationship. For example, these dishes are embellished with crocodile sculptures at the ends, with the saurian's mouth bound by a stylized human form. In Papua, the crocodile is considered to be the psychopomp animal par excellence, the ferryman of souls to the afterlife.
