Yaguma gourd, Trobriand Islands, Massim region, Massim area - Lot 146
Yaguma gourd, Trobriand Islands, Massim region, Massim area Early 20th century Calabash height: 12cm Provenance:. Marcia and John Friede. The Jolika Collection. Rye, New York Bibliography: bibliography: - Marcelin, 2016. Art Massim, reproduced on page 214 - Edge-Partington, James. 1996. Vol. 2, page 162 for similar models in the British Museum Made from a calabash, an inedible fruit grown in the Massim region. They were used to preserve lime, obtained by burning and then grinding shellfish or coral. The round gourds were decorated with symmetrically arranged spiral motifs. The stoppers are made of braided fern and orchid fibers, topped with a wild pig's tooth, drilled to attach ornaments. The corks with the wild pig's tooth were made on the Southeast Island. Gourds from the Trobriand Islands were not decorated in this way. However, it is likely that stoppers were added to gourds from these islands. The stopper is decorated with Chama pacifica shell disks.
