Aire Boiken ceremonial food dish - Papua New Guinea Collection Carved wood Early 19th century Size: diameter 37/38 cm Provenance Didier Zanette private collection French private collection Although Michael Hamson's Art of Boiken, published in 2011, added to the information provided by Helene Dennett after her trip to Papua, the interpretation of the ornamental motifs inscribed on Boiken dishes remains obscure. A beautiful circular dish with an engraved concentric motif on the base, from which emerges an animal, probably a lizard, whose rounded face sketches a broad smile. Christian Coiffier's much-appreciated Coiffier to illustrate the Galerie Didier Zanette exhibition Didier Zanette, dedicated to Boiken dishes, and contributing to the study of their motifs, publications by Henry Aufenanger in 1970 and Helene Dennett in 1980.
