Massim cane - Lot 137
Massim cane Ebony wood XIX°- XX° century Height: 106cm Provenance:. Todd Barlin. Harry Beran Collection (HB 699). Marcia and John Friede. The Jolika Collection. Rye, New York bibliography: - Marcelin, 2016. Art Massim, reproduced page 86 n°42 In the heart of the Massim region, as Harry Beran Beran, this batôn is the only one of its kind recorded and referenced. The refined, finely engraved decoration of this cane depicting squid, found on the lintels of chief's houses in these regions and on the decoration of shields in the Trobriand Islands, unquestionably indicates that it was made in these islands. The long cylindrical pommel has a dark brown patina and is decorated with interlacing. The handle is finely engraved vertically and alternately with snakes and squid, as well as alternating geometric motifs. The only known example.
