Ceremonial paddle, Ra'ivavae Island. Islands - Lot 110
Ceremonial paddle, Ra'ivavae Island. Islands Iles Australes. French Polynesia Callophyllum inophyllum (tamanu) carved wood. 1st half of the 19th century. Height: 124cm Provenance: - Limoges private collection Finely carved throughout with alternating chevron-shaped geometric motifs. The top of the circular handle is topped by a frieze of eight stylized female figures. The paddles formerly used in Polynesia to maneuver outrigger pirogues were rarely decorated. were made for barter or sale with sailors as early as the first half of the 19th century. The exact origin and function of these "ceremonial" objects is not known, as they were probably kept in family temples and used for ritual dances. Ra'ivavae's inhabitants had a reputation as excellent sculptors, but in the late 1840s, the island's population was decimated by epidemics and the tradition of this remarkable art was lost.
