Râpe te rakau saro niu, Island of Tikopia, Solomon Islands - Lot 86
Râpe te rakau saro niu, Island of Tikopia, Solomon Islands Solomon Islands, Para-Polynesia Wood 19th - 20th century Dimensions: 42.5 x 79 x 15 cm. Provenance: - Acquired before 2005 by Michael Hamson in Australia. - Ex private collection, France - Galerie Meyer, Paris Resolutely graphic, with streamlined, timeless forms, this tripod seat features a front leg in the shape of an inverted Y, curved in a subtle dynamic, attached to the underside, and a monoxyle rear leg. This rare seat was used to grate coconut pulp. A section of clam or pearl oyster was traditionally attached to the elongated, schematized head as an adze. Unusual carved decoration all around the seat lends the chair an unusual, distinctive and remarkable elegance. Due to the size of the island (five square kilometers) and its isolation, objects from Tikopia are extremely rare in public and private collections. Only the Metropolitan Museum of New York holds a very similar rasp (Inv.1979.206.1490). Beautiful brown patina with shiny mahogany tones.
