Spatula Louisiade Archipelago - Lot 80
Spatula Louisiade Archipelago Tortoise shell, Spondylus shell, trace of lime 19th century Height: 22 cm Surmounted by a crescent engraved with interlaced scrolls. The two ends represent two bird heads. A crescent-shaped spatula had currency value on the Southeast Island, where only a chief's daughter could use it. It was also reserved for funeral banquets and given to the widow. As precious as it is fragile, the beauty of its engraved decoration is matched by the colorful nuances of the tortoiseshell, depending on the light.
