Ceremonial food dish - Lot 9
Ceremonial food dish Murik Lake area - Sepik river estuary - Papua New Guinea New Guinea Late 19th - early 20th century Dimensions: 28 x 18 cm Carved wood Provenance Didier Zanette private collection French private collection Collected in the Lac Murik region at the mouth of the Sepik River by Didier Zanette, this rare dish, with its small size and head-shaped protuberance, represents a turtle in the round, the clan's mythological animal. The quality of the wood, black and dry, confirms its advanced age. The double representation of the animal, both formal and graphic but always schematically abstract, reinforces its symbolic importance, affirms technical know-how and testifies to the ingenuity of the people of the Sépik River.
