The Marriage of Aeneas and Dido, Europe, circa 1750 Folded fan, the leaf in skin, mounted in the English style and painted with gouache. Dido begs Aeneas, wearing the warrior's helmet, to unite with her, pointing to a flaming altar. Hymen is surrounded by lovers. On the right, a sail on the horizon evokes Aeneas' departure, and the flying horse Pegasus. Rich border of shells and flowers. Reverse painted with three flying loves. Finely cut, carved, engraved, burgued, silvered and gilded white mother-of-pearl mount. A young woman is courted by a gallant while a child frees a bird from its cage. Height 29.5 cm-H.f. 14.5 cm (accidents, restorations)
