Auguste Ambroise Lignereux dit Saint-André de Lignereux (Jouy-le-Châtel, 1861 - Paris, 1936) Box-pyxid in stamped and chased leather with ivory body carved with saintly figures under arcatures; brass mounting with green glass cabochons; inscription in gold lettering on the underside Saint André Membre du Jury Médaille d'Honneur Salon des Artistes Artistes. Late 19th century H. 28 cm - Gross weight 732 gr (one small crack) Provenance : Emile Zola Collection (1840 - 1902), Paris Collection of Docteur Louis Dupuy-Dutemps (1871-1946) and Madame Dupuy-Dutemps, Paris Auguste-Ambroise Lignereux, known as Saint-André de Lignereux, is renowned for his work as a leather decorator. His work is acclaimed today for renewing bookbinding techniques. He is sometimes a follower of historicist taste, as shown by a pyxis adorning his desk (fig.) or a magnificent embossed leather case in his hand (Etude Tajan sale November 29, 2022, lot 116), and sometimes of the Art Nouveau style, in the vein of a case and binding preserved at the Petit Palais - musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris. The buyer will be given a small notebook listing the objects belonging to Monsieur and Madame Louis Dupuy-Dutemps, which mentions this box with the following indication: the carved ivory circle from the Middle Ages was part of Emile Zola's collection and was purchased by the artist on the writer's death.
