Wool and silk tapestry depicting the Chariot of Apollo guided by Dawn. Based on a painting by Guido Reni; border in imitation of a frame. 17th century H. 170 cm - L. 280 cm (accidents and tears) This tapestry was woven after the Aurora fresco painted in 1614 by Guido Reni (1575 -1642). This decoration was commissioned by the Roman cardinal Scipione Borghese for the ceiling of his nymphaeum (Casino dell'Aurora) in Rome. It depicts Aurora, goddess of the dawn, giving birth to a new day as she paves the way for Apollo, god of light. Apollo, god of light, who follows in his chariot surrounded by the Hours. (fig.)
