Large majolica dish, decorated with the emblem of Ercole d'E - Lot 82
Large majolica dish, decorated with the emblem of Ercole d'Este, Duke of Ferrara. Deruta, late 15th century D. 38 cm (some chips) Provenance : Michel Meyer, Paris Exhibition Back to Deruta, Sacred and Profane Beauty, Muséo regional della Ceramica, Deruta, 2018 n n° 24, pp 140-141, III. The representation of this dish is an enigmatic play on the heraldic symbolism of Renaissance princes. It revolves around emblems of the city, and of the dukes, protectors of Ferrara. The central carnation is the city flower of Ferrara. The leaves (representing the River Po) wrap around a ring symbolizing the city walls. The ring supporting a diamond is the heraldic device of the d'Este family, and more specifically of Ercole d'Este (1431-1505), nicknamed the Diamond.
