Large Virgin and Child in walnut carved in the round and pol - Lot 81
Large Virgin and Child in walnut carved in the round and polychromed. Standing with her left leg bent, Mary is holding her nude Son on her left arm. She is dressed in a dress with a neckline fastened with a small button, blousantant above a belt whose pompom-ended ends cross. A coat rests on her left shoulder, one flap pulled back to the front to form tiered wave pleats. Numerous details testify to the finesse of the sculpture, including the loose hair falling in soft, wavy strands, the faces with their delicate, peaceful features, the Child's left hand touching his mother's breast, and Jesus' spine protruding from his back. Italy, Tuscany, late 14th century H. 126 cm (accidents and missing parts visible) The two Annunciation sculptures in Montepulciano Cathedral, attributed to Francesco di Valdambrino (Siena, 1375-1435), bear a certain resemblance to the Virgin and Child shown here, notably in the surprising length of the legs, the broken pleats in the lower part of the tunic and the oval face combining gentleness and severity.
